  2. Act out (or write) a more realistic version of the conversation between Richard and Donald using the C.A.R.E. Confrontation, in which Donald interrupts and reacts to Richard’s comments.


Conversation C  

Sometimes a patient may be difficult to work with because of the situation rather than the patient’s personality. In the next conversation, Mrs. Hayes is being held for observation after dizziness and fainting. She has been through a battery of tests without appearing to have any anxiety. Her nurse, Janet Stevens, expects to find her patient calm and relaxed. Listen and answer the questions below.

  1. How does Mrs. Hayes react to Janet telling her that they need to take more blood?

  2. The narrator asks, “Is Mrs. Hayes suddenly angry about the hospital’s tests or the lack of definite results? Is she angry with Janet and the nursing staff?” Why do you think Mrs. Hayes is so upset?
